X-Mini the DroidX Mini-Me

by on Aug.23, 2010, under Accessories, Devices, Misc

You can’t help it but wonder if some of the Droid campaign artwork was inspired by the X-Mini. Either way this tiny little speaker is the perfect companion for your Droid. I don’t remember where I got mine from and how long it’s been sitting in my desk, but this weekend I discovered this little marvel.

The sound quality and volume is quite amazing coming from a speaker this small. The built-in tether wire connects right to the head-phone jack of your Droid and the on-board rechargeable battery is said to be lasting for 12 hours of sustained output. I used mine all weekend for many hours without re-charge and this unit is now definitely part of my travel gear.

The X-Mini comes with a USB charging cable and you can even daisy-chain multiple units together for even louder output.

Voice Mail WAV Files on Android – Part II

by on Aug.22, 2010, under Accessories, Apps, Misc, wav2mp3

Per popular demand I added a NEW feature to the existing conversion service that now allows you to automatically convert your voice mails. Previously you had to manually forward the email containing the wav attachment to wav2mp3_at_droidstory_dot_com to get a message emailed back with the converted mp3 file attached. If you receive a lot of voice mails that can be a hassle.

If your current phone system allows you to forward voice mails via email, simply change your existing email address to the following new format (here is an example):

All you have to do is basically change the @ symbol in your email address to # and add @droidstory.com to the end.

The old manually method of forwarding voice (e)mails to wav2mp3_at_droidstory_dot_com still works too, or you can just use the new address format if you want the reply sent somewhere else.

And the best part is: Unlike similar services, there is still no setup or registration required.

And it works for iPhones too. ;)

Use the comment section to report any problems or if you need any setup help. Enjoy!

Voice Mail WAV Files on Android

by on Aug.06, 2010, under Accessories, Apps, Misc, wav2mp3

Our company phone system allows me to forward voice mails as file attachments. Unfortunately, playing the WAV files on my Android phone doesn’t work. There are some apps in the market that allow you to play the different wav-file formats, but I decided it wasn’t worth buying/installing yet another app for the few times I needed this feature. Instead, I enabled a simple conversion-mail-back service on the DroidStory server.

If you ever need a quick conversion of a voice mail wav file to mp3, simply forward your email containing the attachment to wav2mp3_at_droidstory_dot_com and you’ll get a MP3 file mailed back.

That’s it, no registration or setup required. Enjoy!

PS: No worries – your privacy is ensured. Our server space is much too valuable to keep your files. All data gets removed right after conversion. Guaranteed!

Nexus One Dock $45 – Only $19.99 with Two-Year Contract

by on Jan.28, 2010, under Accessories, Devices

The Nexus One Desktop Dock is now available in the Google Store. Of course, I’m kidding about the two-year contract option, but forty-five bucks for a dumb piece of plastic with a USB connector.

Google, seriously?!!!

The Droid Dock sells for $25, which is about as much I’d be willing to spend on a phone accessory.

The Nexus Dock does have an audio connector though, which is missing from the Droid Dock. Does this justify $45 – I think not! Let’s see what the aftermarket can come up with…

Update: Apparently the Dock uses Bluetooth for the audio connection, so I stand corrected, the “plastic” has some smarts. Still, silicon is cheap.

Droid Dock

by on Nov.03, 2009, under Accessories

Where do you keep your cell phone at night?  If you are like many, it sits near your bedside.  For some in my family, it is the night stand alarm clock and phone.  (My children don’t even have a wired phone in their homes.  So, the cell must be nearby.)  Unfortunately, the phone just hangs off a tethered charger.

If your cell has a docking station, the station adds little value.  For example, my Treo dock was more useful near my computer for HotSync than near my bed.

The Motorola Droid Multimedia Station is more than an alarm clock.

The Motorola Droid Multimedia Station is more than an alarm clock.

Welcome to the Motorola Droid Multimedia Station.  It is a docking station is that totally different than what we’ve seen before.

When you insert the Droid at an angle, it automatically detects that it is in the Multimedia Station.  Of course, it charges while in the dock, just like the Treo dock.  But that is where the similarity ends.

The Droid multimedia station displays the time and functions as an alarm clock.  Nice.  It also displays the outside temperature and the weather.  Good morning in a glance!

In the multimedia station, the Droid also plays music and videos.

The price is $30, which is about the same price as docking stations from other products.  And, it does have a USB cable to connect to a PC.
